about

Dragon’s Eye Recordings welcomes Tokyo-based self-taught musician Soloi Sounds to the imprint with the release of SAIHA. On SAIHA, Soloi Sounds explores the artificiality he senses in Japanese culture, which constantly wavers between imported culture and its own identity. The title "Saiha" is a Japanese word that means "Breaking Wave."

To explore this tension, he chose to create the album using only the Japanese instrument Taishōgoto and environmental sounds recorded in various parts of Japan, along with effects and editing. The Taishōgoto was invented in Nagoya, Japan, by combining an instrument called Nigenkin (Two-Stringed Harp) with keys inspired by typewriters and was released in 1912, the first year of the Taisho era. A chimera of a koto and a typewriter, the Taishōgoto was designed for beginners to connect Japanese and Western musical cultures and exemplifies the tension he was looking to explore.

The sound of the Taishōgoto's metal strings (the strings of the original two-stringed koto are made of silk thread) is similar to that of a traditional Japanese koto, guitar, or mandolin, or when played with a bow, it resembles a violin or cello. But it is none of those things; in a way, Soloi Sounds considers it a fake sound, something constantly trying to be something else.
